Shearwater - Rook

Shearwater - Rook

I was trawling through some Magic: The Gathering videos for some inspiration for another blog that I have just started http://mtghunter.wordpress.com/, when I noticed that one of the tracks used as ‘music backing’ was Rook by Shearwater. As a result I have been listening to the album on Spotify.

Track listing:

  • On the Death of the Waters
  • Rooks
  • Leviathan, Bound
  • Home Life
  • Lost Boys
  • Century Eyes
  • I Was a Cloud
  • South Col
  • The Snow Leopard
  • The Hunter's Star

I then put the band name through a similar artists look-up via last.fm and then looking the results up in AllMusic to get suggestions for key albums:

Enjoy!

Similar Artists To: EMF

EMF - Stigma

When I was searching yesterday for some Tome Jones video’s for my post, I noticed that he often covered EMF’s hit Unbelievable during his live shows. At one point they actually played together on a music show. So that got me thinking about EMF, the second album Stigma (which was way darker sounding than the debut), and similar artists that were around at that time and I ended up putting together one of my similar artists playlists, the process for which I documented on an earlier “Similar Artists To” posts. Here is the album list I ended up with:

  • EMF – Stigma
  • Jesus Jones – Liquidizer
  • Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine – 1992: The Love Album
  • Ned’s Atomic Dustbin – Brain Blood Volume
  • Pop Will Eat Itself – This Is The Day…
  • The Farm – Spartacus
  • The Soup Dragons – Hang-Tent
  • The Wonder Stuff – Never Loved Elvis
  • The Shamen - En-Tact
  • Inspiral Carpets – Life

Well, I suppose I hade better post that EMF/Tom Jones performance, seeing as I mentioned it. In case you are wondering the track Unbelievable (the bands big hit) appeared on EMF’s first album, Schubert Dip.

Favourite Songs With Cat In The Title

Cat

Sitting down to breakfast this morning with my wife, I started up a conversation about favourite songs with cats in the title, as you do. It sort of came about following some late night listening, this week, of Al Stewart's excellent album Year Of The Cat.

Here is the list, in alphabetical order, that we put together. Notice that the Cure have 2 cat related songs, well what do you expect.

  • All Cats Are Grey – The Cure
  • Cat Claw – The Kills
  • Cat Scratch Fever – Ted Nugent
  • Cool For Cats – Squeeze
  • Hell Cat – Scorpions
  • Look What The Cat Dragged In – Poison
  • Love Cats – The Cure
  • Phenomenal Cat – The Kinks
  • Stray Cat Strut – Stray Cats
  • What’s New Pussycat – Tom Jones
  • Wild Cats 0f Kilkenny – The Pogues
  • Wild Catz – Tygers Of Pan Tang
  • Year Of The Cat – Al Stewart
  • Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat – Say Anything

Of course, some of these were released as singles. So lets se what we can find on YouTube with regard to promo videos and performances.

My Favourite Top Of The Pops Appearances - #1

As a young person growing up in the UK during the 70s, Top Of The Pops was an institution. The discussion at school the next day would often involve talking about what had been show on Top Of The Pops a previous evening. Here are some of my favourite appearances.

Queen – Killer Queen

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP35v9yjDUw]

Jilted John – Jilted John

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxL9dHStGdM]

Sham 69 – Hurry Up Harry

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM0Neo85Rj4]

The Ruts – Babylon's Burning

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erZxdX9enNQ]

The Skids – Into The Valley

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3lyTlCK_JU]

I could go on…but I might save that for another post.

Henry Rollins – Frequent Flyer

Henry Rollins - Frequent Flyer

Last night we checked out Henry Rollins at his spoken word performance in Halifax. I must admit to being more familiar with his work in Black Flag than anything else, so, I was looking forward to experiencing him in a different ‘format’. I was not disappointed, although I would have liked a bit more anecdotes from his visits to various countries.

He spoke, without a break, for three hours. Weaving seamlessly between topics such as, homophobia, war, elections, travel, music, adolescence and acting.

Here’s a favourite of mine, from an earlier tour, about a friendly rivalry between him and Iggy Pop.

Nostalgia Blog: The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

I was out on my usual afternoon ‘constitutional’ and I decided to have The Stone Roses debut as my walking music. What a great choice! It brought back interesting memories of hanging out at the Shelley Arms in Nutley (UK) during the 80’s/90’s. Sadly the Shelley Arms is no longer a pub, although the building is still there (it’s ‘listed’), and has become a family home. The pub, which also had live bands, closed shop once it became advantageous to build on the land around the back of the premises (which was all part of the same property). Warren, who ran the place on behalf of his father (a property developer), was also a school friend who originally lived just up the road from me . It was, I believe, his idea to have live bands (of a wide variety of styles and abilities). Once the venue closed he started up an antiques shop in Forest Row. It’s just down the road from Nutley, and where I lived until a few years ago, until I moved, funnily enough, to Nutley, before immigrating to Nova Scotia at the end of 2009.

Sadly, Warren died suddenly a few years ago.

The reason why it reminds me specifically of Warren, and the Shelley Arms, is that he had a great jukebox there and I can remember being at the ‘Shelley’ one night when I Am The Resurrection came on (it was the last single to be released off the debut album). I was not that familiar with The Stone Roses when they first came out, but my ears pricked up when I heard that great opening drum beat (also used on Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman) and then there is that great guitar freak-out at the end. At the time I thought it was two separate bands, and so, was quite surprised when I checked out to see what was playing and discovered all of it was one Stone Roses song. Not surprisingly the next day I went out and bought the album.

So, I would like to dedicate this post to the memory of Warren and honour him for all the opportunities he gave to local (and quite a few national) musicians, by letting them play. Even the ones that got to play on ‘Bad Bands’ night. Yes, I was there on a Band Bands of Sussex - Bank Holiday Special, where The Dirty Rotten Beer Mats (Toronto’s finest, allegedly, although they looked suspiciously like members of a local punk band) proceeded to ‘pretend’ to be a succession of ‘bad bands’ by swapping instruments. Both ‘classic’ and ear-splittingly load.

Turning back to the album in question. Stone Roses is such a fantastic debut and it is easy to hear why it ends up on so many “Greatest Albums” lists. Just as a reminder here is the track listing:

  • I Wanna Be Adored
  • She Bangs the Drums
  • Waterfall
  • Don't Stop
  • Bye Bye Badman
  • Elizabeth My Dear
  • (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister
  • Made of Stone
  • Shoot You Down
  • This Is the One
  • I Am the Resurrection

Whitehouse - Erector

Whitehouse - Erector

Bit of a retro-post here today. I am specifically doing this in honour of my good friend Chris back in Good Old Blighty. Hey Chris, I know you are a bit of a Whitehouse fan so here is a post regarding their 1981 release Erector. Here is what Allmusic have to say about this classic work in the power electronics genre:

Considered by many as the first power electronics record, Erector set a new standard for experimental noise, characterized by extremely high and low frequencies, piercing electronic effects, and aggressive vocals that speak of power and domination. The first of many releases in 1981 for the Come Organisation, Whitehouse once again took a page from the book of Throbbing Gristle by releasing as much product as possible as quickly as possible. While Throbbing Gristle often released shoddy product to exemplify their mass production/industrial philosophy, Whitehouse made every effort to maintain the highest quality, as can be heard on Erector. Despite its short length, clocking in at four songs and 27 minutes, it stands as one of the greatest works of the U.K. early industrial music scene. A record that is as much about attitude as it is about the music, Erector illustrates the influence of punk rock on the resurgence of experimental music in England at the time. From start to finish, a dark forbidding mood is created that has never before been captured on vinyl. The design is known for its provocative artwork by Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound. Reissued on CD by Susan Lawly in 1995, keeping Stapleton's artwork intact. Highly recommended for fans of experimental music.

Bother! I missed checking Eric Quach out when he played Halifax last night. That’s what you get for not checking The Coast as soon as it comes out. Although, it does mention that he has specially created a soundtrack for Yassine Ouhilal’s art opening at Argyle Fine Art today (Friday 12th March 2010).

Oh well, YouTube to the rescue. Here is an excerpt of a performance from April 11th 2008  in the attic of the Trepid House (http://www.trepid.org) in Waterloo (Ontario) .

I’ve also managed to write a little Java application, using NetBeans IDE, which allows me to look up similar artists on last.fm without going to the website. I have restricted it to the fist 10 similar artists at the moment. Here is what I get for thisquietarmy.

app

So, the top ten Similar Artists to thisquitearmy, according to Last.fm data, are:

  • Aiden Baker and thisquietarmy
  • Nadja

  • Destroyalldreamers

Jimi Hendrix – Valleys of Neptune

Jimi Hendrix - Valleys Of Neptune

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942 and died on September 18, 1970). As a commemoration of Hendrix’s death, Legacy Recordings (the catalogue division of Sony Music Entertainment) will be releasing a new CD, Valleys of Neptune, on March 9th. This will be the first album containing previously unreleased studio recordings in more than a decade. It’s the result of a deal between Enterprise Hendrix (the company that overseas his musical estate) and Legacy Recordings that should see other Hendrix related releases/events to follow. For example, re-releases of classic titles, a tribute tour and a Hendrix version of the Rock Band video game.

Track listing for Valleys of Neptune:

  1. Stone Free
  2. Valleys of Neptune
  3. Bleeding Heart
  4. Hear My Train a Comin'
  5. Mr. Bad Luck
  6. Sunshine of Your Love (instrumental Cream cover)
  7. Lover Man
  8. Ships Passing Through the Night
  9. Fire
  10. Red House
  11. Lullaby for the Summer
  12. Crying Blue Rain

Hendrix was a mere 27 when he died as a result of drinking heavily and consuming some of his girlfriend’s sleeping pills (it is thought that Hendrix was unfamiliar with this particular stronger German brand of pills).

One result of his relatively short life is that the amount of posthumous releases far exceeds those released while he was alive. It is often easy to forget that he released only three studio albums during his career, such is the volume of exploitative material available both legally and illegally. Here is a list of the recordings issued while he was still alive:

Studio albums

  • Are You Experienced? (UK, May 12, 1967 - Track)
  • Are You Experienced? (US, August 23, 1967 - Reprise)
  • Axis: Bold As Love (UK, December 1, 1967 - Track)
  • Axis: Bold As Love (US, January 15, 1968 - Reprise)
  • Electric Ladyland (UK, October 25, 1968 - Track)
  • Electric Ladyland (US, September 16, 1968 - Reprise)

Live Albums

  • Band Of Gypsys (US, March 25, 1970 - Capitol)
  • Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival (US, August 26, 1970 - Reprise) [Side 1 – Jimi Hendrix / Side 2 – Otis Redding]

Compilation Albums

  • Smash Hits (UK, April 16, 1968 - Track)
  • Smash Hits (US, July 30, 1969 – Reprise)
  • Electric Jimi Hendrix (UK, August 16, 1970 – Track)
